About Me

I'm an adjunct professor in philosophy at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and Saint Louis University. I specialize in French phenomenology within the broader field of Continental philosophy of religion, and ethics. While my work draws on historical thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, and Bonaventure for inspiration, I'm uniquely concerned to spotlight the philosophical importance of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. On that note, my general aim is to advance a phenomenology of "littleness" inspired by Thérèse's spirituality which uncovers the surprisingly large philosophical significance of what at first appears weak, fragile, marginal — in short, little. I work to unmask a wide-ranging set of phenomena which at first blush appear small and easily overlooked. The paradigm case is the child's view of the world marked as it is by attitudes of curiosity, awe, excessive desire, and audacity. My ultimate aim is to uncover the the fundamental layers of the experience of spiritual and moral transformation which reveal one's authentic self. For more, see my forthcoming essay, "The Little Way of My Self's Revelation". Before coming to Saint Louis, I earned a master's degree in philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville and a bachelor's in music (piano performance) from Hillsdale College. I'm here thanks to God and my wife's unconditional support. In my free time, I enjoy learning about these things from our young children.
